Maggie Nicols/Fred Frith/Susan Alcorn - February 15, 2009

Nameless Sound presents
a rare opportunity to hear three individualists of creative music
share their visions in a first-time collaboration.

Maggie Nicols (UK) – voice
Fred Frith (UK/San Francisco) - guitar
Susan Alcorn (Baltimore) – pedal steel guitar

Sunday, February 15 2009
8pm
at Diverse Works
1117 East Freeway

$13 admission
$10 students
Everyone under 18 gets in for free.

For information, call 713-928-5653
or go to www.namelesssound.org

With a background in jazz, dance, and theater, Maggie Nicols became an early pioneer in the European free improvisation scene when she joined John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble in the late 1960’s. The Scottish-born performer would soon develop into one of the most unique and innovative vocalists in avant-garde music. Nicols is an artist of distinct individuality. Her agile and wordless improvisations are countered by the devilish sense of humor that she displays when she ad-libs speech into her pieces. Maggie Nicols is an active teacher and leader of workshops that fuse her experiences in music, improvisation, theater, yoga, and activism. Though she is a veteran (she began her career in the early 60’s) and is recognized as the pioneer in her field, Nicols has only ever performed a few times in the United States. For more information on Maggie Nicols, go to www.maggienicols.com.

A wide ranging talent and prolific artist, Fred Frith first gained attention in the early 1970’s as guitarist for the pioneering English avant-garde rock band Henry Cow. Frith has distinguished himself as a guitar player, composer, improvisor, and collaborator. His versatility brings different approaches to his instrument depending on a particular playing situation (i.e., the prepared ‘table-top’ approach or the conventional guitar approach). The range of his collaborators gives an indication as to the scope of his talent and style. A short list of Frith’s partners includes: Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno, Zeena Parkins, Tom Cora and John Zorn (Frith was the bass player in Naked City). Fred Frith is currently a professor of composition, contemporary performance, and improvisation at Mills College in Oakland. For more information on Fred Frith, go to www.fredfrith.com.

Perhaps the world’s premiere avant-gardist on her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Well-known among steel players for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Susan Alcorn first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands. Soon she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of modern classical music (Olivier Messiaen and Krystof Penderecki), avant-garde jazz (John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman), and world music (Indian rags, South American songs, and gamelan orchestra). As a composer, Alcorn has proven to be visionary. Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience, while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression. Alcorn recently moved to Baltimore from Houston. For more information on Susan Alcorn, go to www.susanalcorn.com.

electronic toys pledge drive

Circuit Bending - pledge drive

Sk-1 Project is a lot of things to a lot of people however to a few members of the group--- it's all about the bent instruments.. From the raw exposed circuit board bends to the boutique assembled boards to the DIY boards.. We have really been getting into this.. Got the Mims books on electronics, the Reed Ghazala book. slowly aquiring tools, wires, circuits and instruments.

You can hear a bent instrument on all of the sk-1 project tracks (omitting Cat Antanae - which is theremin and grand piano). We plan on bending more and more and are in need of the raw materials: the medium.

So QUESTION: got any old electronic toys around?? SK-1 Project is now accepting donations for the bent circuit arts.. and electronic experimentation.. Some examples are:

SPEAK & SPELL
SPEAK & MATH
SPEAK & READ
CASIO SA-2
CASIO SA-5
CASIO SK-60
CASIO SK-1
CASIO MT-140
REALISTIC CONCERTMATE 380

ANY toy electronic cell phones.... any small electronic keyboard or voice generator. any old joysticks, controllers. etc.

THANKS
sk-1 project

analog. analouge. analoge. analog. cicuitry. circuitry. chaos detectors. and creators and manipulators and acceptors and receptors, and resistors, adn capacitors, and pots and pot and body contacts, and switches, and filters and synths, and rhodes, and nord, and juno, and theremin and a community of collaborators: see- a family

Important question about a Houston native EDM Artist

Hi guys I'm Sean from Phoenix. I have a question for those in the know about an a native of your town.
You see I must know in win the contest...and get the free tix. :0)

So I have been given a couple clues so far:
He or she was born and raised in Houston, TX until the age of 18.
This electronic music artist lived in LA for 10 years.
This electronic music artist has also lived in Hong Kong for 1 year.
This E.M.A. started producing Electronic Dance Music while still in High School, before the term "EDM" even existed. This artist graduated from high school in 1990

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any ideas or leads would be great too.. Thanks a bunch.

I hope to see you all there. I've produced over a dozen raves back from
94-97 and this is the first one since I've been out of the Navy to bring back the old style that was so loved way back when. Im putting everything that made those parties unforgetable back into this Event, and at the best venue I ever could have imagined. This will not feel like a Club. Everyone working the party are personal friends and we will be making everything in the party spirit to carry on a positive groovin vibe throughout the evening. Come dance your asses off, bond in the chillroom, and share a drink. But come with good intentions and feel them reciprocated in Full! Its been a long time. Lets experience the Deja Vu togehter!

p.s. Forming a street team meeting to pickup flyers, and discuss/plan promotions for DEJA VU throughout
the month of Mar. Msg me if you'd like to be included in the promotion.
Thx!! - Joel

MASK - a new ambient/chillout band!

MASK is a new collaborative project featuring acclaimed Ambient cellist/violinist/producer, Marvin Ayres, and cult icon/singer, Sonja Kristina (Curved Air).

Recording and performing experimental voice and strings Soundscapes, MASK mix extemporisation with structured songs and beats, fusing elements of Ambient/Electronica, Trance and Classical music to breathtaking and original effect..

The maxi single Healing Senses is their first release and is exclusively available via Burning Shed.

The single's three tracks possess a warm emotional ambience, flowing from the serenity of 'Free' through the spiritual voice and cello interaction of 'Lambent Spire' to the mesmerising atmospheric overtones of the title track, 'Healing Senses.'

A DVD of films made for these tracks by Coldcut collaborator and Filmic Artist Outerbongolia will be released by Burning Shed next month. More details and soundbites available from the Mask website.

FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS GREATLY APPRECIATED

trance[]control History:

The production duo trance[]control was founded early 1997 by the cousins Alexander Carlborg & Andreas Wennersköld. At a start music was only a common interest between the two but but the future had a bit more in stock then that. Andreas who previous to trance[]control played various instruments and was used to music programming had a fairly solid background within music. This compared to Alexander who pretty much didn’t have any background within music what so ever.

Today trance[]control is one of the largest, most well known and most downloaded bands on the internet (nearly 10 MILLION downloads on mp3.com). Even though the time from start to today has been fairly short counted in years, the path still has been long with many tricky turns along the way.

Their style & sound can generally be described as hard, progressive & melodic trance. But keep in mind that trance is a very broad genre where the lines between the different sub-genres are extremely thin. The bands specialty has over the years become to produce music that appeal people that normaly wouldn’t listen to this type of music. The age-scale of their listeners range from 10-65 years, though the more common group of people are between 15-30 years old. Despite the slightly odd and undergroundbased style of this band, their music still appeal the most addicted trance lovers out there as well. For instance, the band frequently is compared to other superstar Dj’s such as Commander Tom, BT, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Dj Tiësto to name a few.
Karl Bartos - Communication

Has anyone heard the latest Karl Bartos record "Communication". Ex-Kraftwerk (TEE, Man Machine, Computer World, co-work with Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr). It's a really solid record, reminiscent of the stuff on Electric Cafe, though much better written and more melodic and dancy. I find it ironic that he didnt do any work on the latest Kraftwerk album TDFS03, and yet his solo work seems much more solid than what the Hutter and Schneider are putting out these days.

This album totally took me by surprise.

Out tomorrow. Although i think almost everyone on here has it already. Damn that band just can't win. I hear jealous lovers wasnt even suppossed to be released until a year after it was already being played by dj's everywhere. Supposedly the CD is already number 4 hundred and something on the amazon charts , and its not even out yet.
